Economics influences our everyday lives whether we realize it or not.
Even our labor-leisure tradeoff, our decision to work or relax, is
guided by economic principles.
Microeconomics is the branch of economics that analyzes the market behavior of individual
consumers and firms in an attempt to understand the decision-making
process of firms and households.
Those who have studied Latin know that the prefix micro - means small, so it shouldn’t be surprising that microeconomics is the study
of small economic units. The field of microeconomics is concerned with
things like:
- Consumer decision making and utility
maximization
- Firm production and profit maximization
- Individual market equilibrium
- Effects of government regulation on individual
markets
- Externalities and other market side effects
While Macroeconomics, on the other hand, looks at the big picture hence macro. It focuses on the national economy as a whole and provides a
basic knowledge of how things work in the business world.
